OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUÉ
Admiral-Lord Mountevans Committee, Questions Legitimacy of Tag Team Wrestling Competitions
Sir Solomon Simpson KC, esteemed Chair of the Admiral-Lord Mountevans Committee, today issued a formal statement regarding the status of tag team wrestling contests, clarifying the Committee’s position on the matter and raising concerns about the legitimacy of such events.
In his statement, Sir Solomon noted, "While the tradition and spirit of wrestling in Britain has long been upheld by the Committee, it is with measured skepticism that we address the growing trend of tag team wrestling competitions. Although promoters are free to organize such matches at their discretion, we, the Admiral-Lord Mountevans Committee, will not recognize any British Champion in this form of competition."
Tag team wrestling, where teams of two compete together in bouts, has gained increasing popularity in recent years, but Sir Solomon was firm in his view that such matches stray from the fundamental principles of the sport. “The essence of British wrestling lies in the discipline and skill of individual competition. While we respect the right of promoters to stage tag team events, any claims to national titles in this category will remain unendorsed by this Committee,” he added.
Sir Solomon went on to clarify that any promotions claiming a "European," "World," or other such tag team championship would be considered unofficial. "We regard these proclamations as misleading, and while not forbidden, they will be frowned upon by the Mountevans Committee and seen as detracting from the legitimacy of recognized championships."
Promoters and fans of tag team wrestling may continue to enjoy the spectacle of these matches, but under the guidance of the Admiral-Lord Mountevans Committee, the focus will remain on preserving the integrity of traditional, one-on-one competition.
