To the Ring, Old Chap! Wrestling Classics Back for a Jolly Good Tussle
Brace yourselves Grapple Fans for a veritable treat of titanic proportions! It appears that our good friends at The Super Channel, that ever-enterprising satellite television station based in Luxembourg, have done the unimaginable. In an announcement sure to send ripples through the most elegant drawing rooms, they’ve acquired the rights to air the long-lost archival footage of wrestling matches dating all the way back to the 1960s.
Now, I don’t know what you get up to of an evening, but there is something irresistibly charming about the idea of settling into one’s armchair, decanter of the finest claret at the ready, to witness the grand old sport of wrestling in its halcyon days. The footage, as I’m told, comes from the illustrious KING GEORGE VI WRESTLING CLUB—an establishment known for bouts that were as much about sportsmanship as they were about the satisfying thud of a gentleman being thrown expertly across the ring.
The Super Channel, already famed for its fortnightly offering, Out For The Count, has decided that the time is nigh to reacquaint us with these grappling giants of yore. In a move that must surely be applauded, they have stitched together these rare films into what promises to be a thrilling new television production most delightfully titled The Compendium, airing regularly on The Super Channel.
Imagine, if you will, footage of those brawny figures of decades past—when men of steel squared off in the squared circle, cheered on by throngs of spectators who, no doubt, were attired in their Sunday best. One can almost hear the roar of the crowd, feel the tension in the air as history’s finest practitioners of the noble art prepare to engage in what can only be described as battles for the ages.
A spectacle not to be missed, premiering soon on The Super Channel featuring ring heroes of the past such as Billy Henderson, Eric Addison and Robert Greenwood.
